The TMRG at Liverpool Hope began by developing time maps in 1999. The original idea was to make a fairly straightforward graphical editing tool which would enable historians, geographers etc to draw quick maps showing developments of interest over time. The editor enabled the user to add and change objects on the map as the map progressed. In 2001, we added the facility to save our time maps as XML files and created a Java Applet which would enable the maps to be viewed over the web. Since then we have developed software tools to generate 3D time maps as VRML worlds and tools to generate time maps from a temporal database. The temporal database itself is generated from spreadsheets created by the historian. Exploration of the educational potential of time maps has lead to the development of 3D "Builder" tools for use in primary and secondary schools that are intended to enable the children to build temporal models of their locality. The Builder concept of building models from parameterised components has led to a recognition of the applicability of this technique in many areas. Church Builder is an example of this.
